Fishing in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

Howdy y'all!

In my first hub, entitled Outdoorsy Stuff, I alluded to my own particular interest in man's favorite sport. Well, if the truth be known, it's the sport/hobby that I have had in my life the longest too. I only get Deeper in LOVE with this art/sport/science more, every year.

So friends, this hub is yet another chance for me to turn a few more Fishin' guys, into the home-lake and or home-river, fishermen this year. .Also it will hopefully encourage folks who don't fish yet, to maybe give it a try...

Closer fishing means you can go more often and have more fun. Stay closer to home and get to know your home waters better and catch more fish. Besides, saving on gas is a pretty good incentive to fish nearer waters too. ;-)

Why travel hundreds of miles to catch fish when our own local rivers and lakes can supply you with all the fish you need? Stick closer to home this year and get to know your own home waters. You see, that's a very big part of catching fish consistantly. Knowing the waters that you are fishing. Try to learn even more about them the next time you're out there too. Never let up boys...

So to perhaps answer your question? Yes sir-ree Bob, there's indeed some fine Fishing to be had in the nation's Capital City of Ottawa, Ontario! :-) Take a little trip to your own local lake, river, stream, crik or pond soon, and see for Yourself, if I'm blowin' smoke or what. I mean, like, If I can catch fish, based out of Ottawa, Ontario, then You will find fish closer to You than You think too. I'll bet on it. :-)

There are two main rivers, well three if you count the Gatineau River, which just happens to flow into the Big "O" from the Qubec side, thet are ready to supply me and a growing number of others here, with some very interesting fishing possibilities.

For example, some VERY nice (healthy & fat & sassy) Large Mouth Bass, have been photographed, and released unharmed, while being held carefully by one of the many Bass Pro's from the Bass Fishing Leagues which have been here for a few years consistantly now too. Even the Semi-Pro's, and the regular folks like You and me, turn up fish over 3 and 4 pounds evry time out, in those Kool Tourneys. If you haven't taken Your Children to be a Spectator, at one of these Fine Events, then, my dear Parent Friend, You OWE those wonderful kiddies of Your's, a tour down there next summer! Fishing, has Finally turned into a Big Deal and ALL Children, should have at the least, this type of opportunity to SEE a nice part of what Fishing, the Art, Sport and Sience, is about. We could all do a little more to encourage our Youth to learn about Fishing.

The Ottawa River and the Rideau River connect us to people from all over the world. Thousands and thousands of Tourists visit Ottawa every single year! As they travel our waterways, and saunter down our beautiful streets, it's interesting to note that most of them have no idea (nor care, I suppose) that there is really some Good Fishing, within a few blocks of where they are standing. Seems strange though, to me anyway, that there is absolutely Nothing, mentioned about the Sport of Fishing at all, as a matter of fact, in all those fancy, Parliament Hill guide books and pamphlets or anywhere. ;-)

I've personally been trying to spread the word about Fishing, even more now. As it turns out, I see plenty of school kids on the OC Transpo, daily, and from those observations, it appears that they ALL lack any fishing knowledge or even inerests in Outdoorsy stuff in general. I find that Very sad and disheartning. They seem to think they know lots, like, about junky games and funky phones and what's cool and how Big is your dumb T freakin' V and what did you pierce this time or how many tats they're sporting and stuff like that? Parden my French Canadian ancestory for saying that in the old days, when I myself was gettin' Groomed in the Art of Koolness, we'd call all of that kinda stuff, Sh*t, period. :-)

A few years ago I built my first totally Free webpage about Fishing stuff, over at my oldest servers, the fine folks @ Tripod.com. Here's the URL to that early creation, right here, provided

http://larrybass.tripod.com/Fishing.html

you've got a spare minute or three and a new Tab open on yer slick FireFoxy Loxy, browser. :-0

I've also just recently created a neat little Fishing related Lens over at Squidoo http://www.squidoo.com/FishingOttaw , a fine place by the way, for Anyone who wants to share some good stuff with others, much like the wonderful folks here, on Hubpages. It is now quite a Pleasure for me to share my long LOVE, for Fishing in it's many forms with YOU right here, on this little Hubpage.

Now, it's only my second Hub mind you, but it's hand-built, like the other one, with lots of deep Fishin' Love, that I'm not too shy about trying to share with Y'all in here either! :-) Hopefully it may uncover a lot of neat Fishing stuff for You, personally or someone you know even!

Oh ya, Please people, DON'T be shy about sharing a link here with a friend or two, that You know likes Fishing, if indeed you're so inclind to do such things periodically... :-)

Anglers Angles...

There are So many Angles to fishing, that, to inject a little humor in here, that must be part of why a lot of people have been calling it Angling, for so many years? :-) It's kinda like hunting exect your game is wet and you don't have to kill it. Just give it a little pat, if You want, or simpley Pentax it, as I like to call, taking pictures of things these days. :-)

The Stalking Your quarry part, of the two Sports rates pretty high up there when it comes to why most long time Fishermen and women might want to get into Fishing. It's a very REAL thing, especially when you factor in the LIVE senses awareness part, of both You And the Critter yer lookin' to Fool...

ENTER--- the Lindner Brothers...

Now these boys had more angles than a Master Carpenter! :-)

Yes folks, it was Al and Ron Lindner, many years ago now, that developed and shared with us all, the F+L+P=S fishing formula, for smart fishermen and women. The F is for fish, to Know your target species. Understand your particular fish and his ways, and you will be started down a wonderful learning curve of life.

The L of course, stands for Location. Where does your target fish Love to spend his/her time and when are they in those places or general areas? When you start studying particular structures and underwater data, and how all that relates to your fish, you will have stepped into the world of the thinking fisherman.

Obviously the P then, stands for the fine art part of the above equation. Yup, P stands for Presentation, how you do something. The zen of doing something almost goes on auto pilot when you start getting it together. Presenting your lures to the fish is the final act of trying to entice a bite. The better we know our lures and how to properly use them, the more fish we will entice! That's a factoid you can make book on... ;-)

Although Not restricted to Fishing in Ottawa, the next section of this Hubpage looks at a few Angles of Fishing that I have dabbled in for years and have achieved Much happiness from...

Pickin' & Choosin'...

There's a pile of Pickin' and Choosin' when Angling. For instance, when a lure is chosen to be the first one of many to get wet during the day, on that first cast, which one is picked? Then, what is that important decision based on?

A lot of guys will pitch the lure that they heard some good stuff about, on TV or from a friend maybe. Many others toss out whatever they have caught fish on, the last time out or even last year maybe. Questionable ways to figure out which proper fishing tool you need, to start off your day, if you asked me.

I've even known guys to use only their Lucky lure, the one they say that always seems to hook something or other, almost everytime it's hauled out of the Tackle-box. Some guys just try the one that someone gave them for a birthday present? Hmmm... :-)

Well...sadly enough for those folks, that is NOT how the first lure of the day is to be picked out from all the other so called Hot-Lures in that big box. Nope. There is Nothing scientific there, only what we might call, emotion. What we want and need here, is logic folks. Thinking about the conditions at hand, there, in the present situation you are facing, on your lake. Take lure choosing seriously and thoughtfully, and you WILL entice more fish! Say's me, lb. :-)

You see, this lure choosing stuff is kinda similar to a mechanic, knowing which tool to reach for, under whatever conditions or problems he's presented with. Not only does he have to know that he needs a screwdriver and not a hammer, but what type of screwdriver and size, matches the screw needing work? A sharp angler, picks his first lure of the day the same way. What conditions are there in front of him, on the lake or river? Read those conditions.

The more time you spend on the water, the better you get at choosing the right lures, to match the main conditions at least. Then you refine your presentation from there to see what they really want...

The S in the formula, of course, stands for Success. That's the stuff you're lookin' for when you're out on the water, chasin' fish...

Their, F+L+P=S, fishing formula by the way, works in the USA, Europe, Canada and well, about EVERYWHERE as far as that goes. Al & Ron Lindner and their boys, live eat and breath fishing and they really dig sharing their LOVE for it with the whole world, and they always have...

Now that I've whetted your appetite, I'll continue with this fish formula stuff a little later, so that you may absorb the stuff I've logged here so far and maybe even put a little of it to good use in your waters this spring...

Here's the URL for any of you really serious fishermen/women out there reading this. Go check 'em out for yourself.

Cool Lures...

What follows here is just one aspect, or angle, to fishing, that lots of folks don't pay enough attention to. Welcome to the wonderful world of modern day artificial fishing lures...

Lure gathering, or collecting, is one of those powerful angles. The angles get pretty sharp, when your lookin' at modern day precision made artificial fishing lures, capable of catchin' them smart ol' fishies. Yup, Artificial baits So deadly, that guys win thousands of dollars in cash in tourneys by using them and refining their final presentation with them.

These things are our tools of the trade, folks! :-) Never underestimate the POWER of a finely tuned artificial, in the hands of an expert fisherman...

Rapala Shad Rap - Killer Suspender
Rapala Shad Rap - Killer Suspender

Rapped!

This awesome suspending plug or crank-bait is definately one of the deadliest lures I have ever had the pleasure of fishing with. Rapala has been a well known leader in the Fishing Tackle Industry for like forty years. I was one of the first guys in the Sudbury area to score one when they first arrived there in the mid 60's. They were THE most realistic looking lure in my growing tackle box. In the water, well, they swam and really looked, like a real minnow. Way better than anything else in that fat little tackle box of my early years on the water. I've picked up quite a number of them over the years and they just keep on catchin' fish.

So, this little beauty pictured above, is where I slowed down on collecting all the different types of the Rapalas. I have none of the baits made within the last few years, except for two tiny husky-jerks, for my Ultra-lite set-up.

You see, for tools, I then had the original floater divers, the countdown sinkers, the DD90 deep divers (floaters) and finally, the Suspending, in your face, Shad Raps! That was pretty well, all the kool Rapala tools I needed, to cover the water confidently and efficiently.

Man oh man, if you fish you owe it to yourself to purchase one of these awseome lures. Then, give it a little time on the water to get to know it and you will see why I'm blowin' it's horn here! :-) I don't get any coinage from Normark for saying any of this, by the way. Nope, It's all just plain ol' good will and tellin' it like it is... :-)

There will be many other Fishing related pictures in here as time goes by, but I wanted to start with this bad boy so You can start catching some nice fish early this year. Rap 'em up!

P.S. I don't think there's a gamefish that swims that will NOT bust a Shad Rap.

Angling with artificial lures...

When you get into fishing strictly with artificial lures, it can be very addicting! Before you know it, you're tweakin' those beautiful baits with nail polish, Googly eyes, wierd hooks, glow-in-the-dark paint etc. etc. :-) As long as those tweaks work out, the more you're inspired to look deeper and find even more solutions to past problems.

The two groups of cranks below, represent two box stock lures and four alphabet type plugs that have been worked over by yours truly, lb.

If you've never seen a "semi-weedless" or "semi-snagless" plug or crank-bait before, you're lookin' @ 4 of them right here, right now. Feast your eyes on 'em and then start tweakin' a few of your own, at home and see how amazing they are.

I've kept this particular tweak out of the media for over twenty years now, and I feel it's time to share the wealth, so to speak, wth my fellow fishermen out there, on this hub. Which by the way will be the ONLY place that I will reveal this super hot, fish-catchin' trick! Enjoy, and Thank You for coming to my little Fishing Hub here at Hubpages dot com to-day...

Google Loved...

Between Hubpages, Blogger, Flickr and Squidoo, Google definitely gathers the Cool folks...

Hubpages & Squidoo, for me anyway, go together like ham & eggs. :-) With my best internet related bud (Google) forming the hash-browns triangle to serve You & Me, the best of the best...

You see, both Squidoo and Hubpages are LOVED by the main unit itself, Google, of course... Both can bring your skills and efforts, feelings, offers, talents, loves etc, to the forefront of the whole planet.

Pipe dream you say? Dumb statement you laugh? I think Not! No laughing matter here. Hubpages dot com and Squidoo dot com are as HOT as two dollar pistols, especially when talkin' Google friendly educational matter! :-)

How do I know this? Simple. I'm a long time Outdoorsy guy from way back and have learned this Internet stuff fairly easily, despite my lack of collage degrees, computer courses etc etc. It's a self teaching type place where You learn what You want.

So you see, self taught little ol' me says that sharing my Love for Fishing on Squidoo, Hubpages, Blogger, Google and other web places, has opened many doors. I'd like to be able to find YOU out there, as easily as this poorly (formerly) educated dude from Sudbury Ontario, Nickle Capital of the World. :-)

Check out my little blurb about the Great Google over here---->

http://www.squidoo.com/googlelovesme

Then, you could test both of these Kool places out for yourself and then maybe you'll see why I LOVE Google So Much and why I know that Google Loves Hubpages and Squidoo about equally. :-)

My Squidoo page has already reached the top of the first page on Google for my keywords "larrybass squidoo" as did "larrybass hubpages" bring in a number one listing too. :-) This stuff works folks, believe it.

Oh, and don't forget about the power of the great keywords, Blogger and Flickr either. You see, people are picture oriented and Google has been pulling up my pictures and pages lately, when those keywords are searched too. :-)

So, Mr.Norway,

Do you dig fishin' in Septemer? We'll probably need to wear jackets and long pants though. :-) We could hit the Ottawa in the stretch behind Parliament Hill, Or we could try the Rideau, say up around Hurdman or Bronson even.

Let me know,

Larrybass,

I enjoyed this hub. Sorry I missed it earlier busy here. I love fishn' and spend as much time as possible on Lake Michigan. I like perchin and going for the coho's and kings. Got a few nice browns the last couple years. Wrote a hub about smokin trout. I have several hubs about women fishin and even a fishin chicken cartoon story that was on going til' my art studio flooded. Feel free to take a gander at my hubs and share them with your lady friends. Some of my hubs would be a good laugh for you and your fishing buds too.

I agree that the local waters are the best to fish and am damn lucky to be just a few miles from the south shore of L. Michigan. Fishin's my game, C.S. Alexis is my name. Keep in touch now.
